How to Prepare for a Mediterranean Cruise
Published Thursday, August 1st 2024 - Updated Monday, August 5th 2024Sailing through the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean, the warm sun lightly kissing your skin… All while you explore ancient ruins, devour delectable cuisine, and discover the best of hidden gems. Done right, a Mediterranean cruise is much more than just a vacation; it’s a journey through history, culture, and breathtaking beauty.
To ensure your Mediterranean adventure is all smooth sailing, I’ve put together a small guide to help you prepare. So, without further ado…
When to book the cruise?
This might surprise you, but cruises sail the Mediterranean all year round. However, you should keep in mind that different seasons deliver different experiences. The main cruise season is from April till November (with June to September being the peak months). That’s when you can enjoy the best of the Mediterranean allure with long, sunny days and a vibrant nightlife. On the other hand, it’s also when you’ll have to share the cruise with many other tourists and pay a heavier price tag.
Spring, April through May, brings mild temperatures and smaller crowds. The winter months come with chilly weather and allow you to explore the quieter side of the Mediterranean.
When it comes to booking your cruise, the rule is the earlier, the better. It’s best to book at least 6 months to a year in advance. If you’re looking to grab discounts, consider booking in January or February, when cruise lines run their sales.
Choose the cruise.
When choosing the perfect Mediterranean cruise, there are quite a few things to consider.
Itineraries
Most common are week-long itineraries, but you can easily find 9 to 14-night ones as well. To give you some inspiration, here are some of the best options.
- Western Mediterranean — Explore Spain, France, Monaco, and Italy, including Tuscany and the French Riviera.
- Greece and Turkey — Discover ancient ruins and sun-soaked islands in Greece and Turkey.
- Adriatic Sea — Sail through Croatia, Greece, and sometimes Montenegro and Albania.
- Holy Land — Explore the culture of Israel, Egypt, Cyprus, Greece, and Turkey.
Cruise line
Most cruise lines send at least one ship to the Mediterranean every year. This includes the popular Regent Seven Seas and the amazing Celebrity Cruises. The Royal Caribbean is known for its bigger ships. For a more international vibe on board, you should consider Explora Journeys. If you’re looking for a longer voyage (over 8 days), Viking just might be your best match.
Size of the ship
When deciding on the ship for your cruise, it’s a good idea to take note of the ship size. You can find plenty of amenities and entertainment options on larger ships. On the other hand, smaller ships provide a more intimate atmosphere.
Cabin type
Make sure to choose a cabin that suits your budget and comfort needs. For example, balcony cabins offer stunning views, while interior cabins can be more wallet-friendly.
Must-have experiences in the Mediterranean
To make the most of your cruise, the first step is to pick an itinerary with the best destinations. Italy is great if you love history. Greece allows you to explore charming towns and discover the Acropolis. Expect luxury and spectacular beaches when going for the French Riviera. In case you’re a sun and seafood lover, the Croatian Islands are sure to be a delight.
Make sure to add diversity and excitement to your activities. Think relaxing on the beach during the day and enjoying fresh seafood in the evening. Island hopping one day and visiting historical sites the next. Make sure you make the most of those days you have on the waters!
What to pack?
The Mediterranean region has a temperate climate. With that said, it can get quite chilly in the spring and fall while reaching high temperatures during summer! It’s a good idea to check the weather before your sail date and pack accordingly.
A few must-haves would be:
- Lightweight, breathable clothing, preferably linen or cotton
- Swimwear for your beach days
- A modest outfit (like a shawl that can help you cover up) in case your cruise takes you to religious sites
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Sun protection, including sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat
- A travel adapter for your electronics
- A camera (for obvious reasons!)
